How it works

  1. Pick a file. Drag in a recording, a voice memo or a video. It opens in this tab; nothing is sent to a server.
  2. Choose the format. MP3 or M4A for small files that play anywhere, WAV or FLAC when you need lossless audio, OGG for the web. Set the quality if you like.
  3. Download it. Your browser converts the file and saves the result to your device. If you need a transcript, send the new file to the free Wave AI transcription tool in one click.

Common questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter is FFmpeg running inside your browser, so the file is read and converted on your own device and the result is saved straight back to it. Wave never receives the audio, the video or the file name. We count only that a conversion happened, with the formats and a rough size range.

Is this audio converter really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no daily limit, because the work happens on your device instead of on our servers.

Which formats can I convert?

You can open almost any audio or video file: mp4, mov, webm, mkv, m4a, aac, wav, mp3, ogg, opus, flac and more. You can save the audio as MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV, OGG (Vorbis) or FLAC. For a video, the converter keeps the sound and drops the picture.

Which quality should I pick?

For speech, 128 kbps MP3 or M4A sounds clean and keeps the file small. For music, 192 or 256 kbps; 320 kbps is the MP3 maximum. WAV and FLAC are lossless, so they have no quality setting, but a WAV file is five to ten times the size of the same MP3. Converting can't add quality the original never had.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 500MB. Because everything runs in your browser's memory, files over 200MB can fail on phones and older computers. If that happens, close other tabs or convert to MP3 instead of WAV.

Why convert a file before transcribing it?

Some recordings use a codec a transcription service can't decode, or are video files far bigger than the audio inside them. Converting to MP3 fixes both: the file is small and readable everywhere. After converting, the free Wave AI transcription tool turns it into a transcript with speaker labels and a summary.
