How to translate audio to English

  1. Upload the recording. Drag in an audio or video file: an interview, a voice message, a lecture, a family video, a meeting in another language.
  2. Pick the languages. Set the spoken language (or let it auto-detect) and the language to translate into. English is preselected.
  3. Read, copy or download. The translation opens first, speaker by speaker with timestamps. Switch to the original transcript or the AI summary, copy the text, or download it as .txt, .srt or .vtt subtitles.

Common questions

Is this audio translator really free?

Yes. You can translate up to 5 files per day (200MB each) free, with no account and no watermark. For unlimited recording and transcription, the Wave app has a free plan and paid plans from $80 a year or $15 a month.

Which languages can I translate?

The tool understands 17 spoken languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. You can translate between any two of them, so Spanish to English, English to Spanish or Japanese to Korean all work.

How does it translate audio?

It works in two steps. First the speech is transcribed in its original language, with each speaker labeled and timestamped. Then the transcript is translated line by line, so every translated line keeps its speaker and timing. You get the translation, the original transcript and an AI summary written in your target language.

Can I get translated subtitles?

Yes. Download the translation as .srt or .vtt and load it into YouTube, Premiere, CapCut, VLC or any player that takes subtitle files. The cues use the timings from the original audio.

What happens to my file?

Your file is uploaded to temporary storage, transcribed and translated. We may then keep a private copy of the audio and the original transcript to improve Wave's speech recognition. They are never published. Please don't upload recordings you aren't comfortable sharing with us.

How is this different from the Wave app?

This tool translates files you already have. The Wave app records the conversation in the first place (meetings, phone calls, lectures, interviews) on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Apple Watch, then transcribes and summarizes it automatically. Any finished recording can be translated into another language from its Language tab, and everything stays in a searchable library.
