How to translate German audio to English

  1. Upload the recording. Drag in an audio or video file: an interview, a voice message, a lecture, a family video, a meeting in another language.
  2. Pick the languages. German and English are already selected. Change either one if your recording needs it, or set the spoken language to auto-detect.
  3. Read, copy or download. The translation opens first, speaker by speaker with timestamps. Switch to the original transcript or the AI summary, copy the text, or download it as .txt, .srt or .vtt subtitles.

Common questions

Does it work with Swiss German and Austrian German?

Austrian German and Swiss Standard German transcribe well. Spoken Swiss German dialects (Schweizerdeutsch) are much harder for speech recognition and often come out partly wrong, which carries into the translation. If speakers switch to Hochdeutsch for the recording, results improve a lot.

How does it deal with long German sentences and compound words?

Translation runs on whole lines of the transcript, not single words, so verbs at the end of long clauses and compound nouns are rebuilt into normal English word order. Technical compounds from your field can still be translated literally, so check key terms against the German.

What is it useful for?

Typical uses are notes from calls with German-speaking clients or suppliers, interviews for research or journalism, German YouTube videos and webinars, and lectures for exchange students. For contracts or official documents, use a certified translator; this is a machine translation.

Can I download English subtitles?

Yes. Download the English translation as .srt or .vtt. The cues use the timing of the original German speech, so they line up with the video when you load them into a player or editor.

Is this audio translator really free?

Yes. You can translate up to 5 files per day (200MB each) free, with no account and no watermark. For unlimited recording and transcription, the Wave app has a free plan and paid plans from $80 a year or $15 a month.

What happens to my file?

Your file is uploaded to temporary storage, transcribed and translated. We may then keep a private copy of the audio and the original transcript to improve Wave's speech recognition. They are never published. Please don't upload recordings you aren't comfortable sharing with us.
