How to translate Chinese audio to English

  1. Upload the recording. Drag in an audio or video file: an interview, a voice message, a lecture, a family video, a meeting in another language.
  2. Pick the languages. Chinese and English are already selected. Change either one if your recording needs it, or set the spoken language to auto-detect.
  3. Read, copy or download. The translation opens first, speaker by speaker with timestamps. Switch to the original transcript or the AI summary, copy the text, or download it as .txt, .srt or .vtt subtitles.

Common questions

Does it work for Mandarin and Cantonese?

Mandarin, from the Mainland or Taiwan, transcribes well. Cantonese is recognized much less accurately: expect missed and wrong words, so treat a Cantonese translation as a rough guide. Other varieties such as Hokkien or Shanghainese are not supported.

Can I translate WeChat voice messages?

Yes, once you have the audio as a file, for example a screen recording of the message playing. Any common audio or video format up to 200MB uploads.

How are names, places and numbers handled?

Names are transcribed as Chinese characters and then rendered in pinyin or their usual English form. Homophones can lead to the wrong characters for an unusual name, so check people and company names against what you know. Numbers and dates are generally kept accurately.

Is there an English summary?

Yes. With English as the target language, the AI summary is written in English, listing the main topics and any action items, which makes it easy to share a Mandarin meeting with colleagues who do not read Chinese.

Is this audio translator really free?

Yes. You can translate up to 5 files per day (200MB each) free, with no account and no watermark. For unlimited recording and transcription, the Wave app has a free plan and paid plans from $80 a year or $15 a month.

What happens to my file?

Your file is uploaded to temporary storage, transcribed and translated. We may then keep a private copy of the audio and the original transcript to improve Wave's speech recognition. They are never published. Please don't upload recordings you aren't comfortable sharing with us.
