How to translate Italian audio to English

  1. Upload the recording. Drag in an audio or video file: an interview, a voice message, a lecture, a family video, a meeting in another language.
  2. Pick the languages. Italian and English are already selected. Change either one if your recording needs it, or set the spoken language to auto-detect.
  3. Read, copy or download. The translation opens first, speaker by speaker with timestamps. Switch to the original transcript or the AI summary, copy the text, or download it as .txt, .srt or .vtt subtitles.

Common questions

How does it cope with regional accents and dialects?

Standard Italian with a regional accent, from Milan to Naples, transcribes well. Dialects that are distinct languages in practice, such as Neapolitan, Sicilian or Venetian spoken in full, are recognized far less reliably, and the translation will only be as good as the transcript.

Can I translate old family recordings?

Yes, if the speech is audible. Old tapes and phone recordings with hiss or distant voices lead to gaps and misheard words. Converting the file to mp3 or wav first is fine; the tool accepts most audio and video formats up to 200MB.

Should I pick Italian or let it detect the language?

Pick Italian when you know it. Auto-detect works on longer recordings, but on short or noisy clips choosing the language yourself avoids a wrong guess.

Can I get English subtitles for an Italian video?

Yes. Upload the video and download the English translation as .srt or .vtt. Each subtitle keeps the start and end time of the Italian line it translates.

Is this audio translator really free?

Yes. You can translate up to 5 files per day (200MB each) free, with no account and no watermark. For unlimited recording and transcription, the Wave app has a free plan and paid plans from $80 a year or $15 a month.

What happens to my file?

Your file is uploaded to temporary storage, transcribed and translated. We may then keep a private copy of the audio and the original transcript to improve Wave's speech recognition. They are never published. Please don't upload recordings you aren't comfortable sharing with us.
