Daily Standup Template

A daily standup (daily scrum) template that fits on one screen: each person's update in three lines, blockers called out with who can unblock them, and the follow-ups that come out of the meeting. Use it for live standups or as an async standup thread.

Or skip the template: upload the recording to the minutes generator

Wave AI's free meeting minutes generator transcribes the recording with speaker labels and fills in this structure for you: attendees, discussion, decisions and action items with owners. You can also paste a transcript from Zoom, Teams or Google Meet. No account needed.

When to use it

  • Daily scrum or standup meetings for engineering, product and ops teams
  • Async standups in Slack, Teams or a shared doc
  • Remote teams across time zones that need a written record
  • Spotting blockers that repeat across days

How to fill it in

  1. Copy the table for today. Add one row per team member, or let people fill in their own row before the standup.
  2. Keep each update to one line. What you finished, what you're doing today, and anything in your way. Details go to a follow-up.
  3. Name the unblocker. For every blocker, write who can help. That turns the standup into action.
  4. Log follow-ups separately. Conversations that ran long become follow-ups with the people involved, after the standup.

Notion-friendly Markdown

Paste this into a Notion page and the headings, lists, checkboxes and tables become Notion blocks. It also works in Obsidian, GitHub, Confluence and any Markdown editor.

Common questions

What are the three standup questions?

What did you finish since the last standup, what will you work on today, and is anything blocking you? This template puts the three answers in one row per person so the whole team's status is readable at a glance.

How long should a daily standup take?

Around 15 minutes, whatever the team size. Keep each update to one line and move longer discussions into the follow-ups section so they happen after the standup with only the people who need to be there.

Can I use this template for async standups?

Yes. Paste the table into a shared doc or Notion page each day, or post the three questions in a Slack or Teams thread and have each person reply with their row. The blockers section keeps problems visible either way.

Can I get standup notes from a recording?

Yes. Upload the standup recording to Wave's free meeting minutes generator and choose "Standup": it lists what each person finished, what they're doing today and who is blocked.
